2026 Alabama Species Initiative

Where Alabama’s Wildlife Inspires the Next Generation of Stewards

The Alabama Species Initiative is a collaborative program between the Pelican’s Nest Science Lab and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, designed to turn classroom learning into real-world impact for Baldwin County students.

Through this immersive experience, students research a native Alabama species, explore its habitat and challenges, and develop a creative awareness project that brings their learning to life. Along the way, students connect virtually with scientists at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab—learning directly from experts and discovering how they can serve as ambassadors for the species they study.

Student projects are reviewed and judged by DISL scientists, with winning participants earning a behind-the-scenes summer tour of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab—an unforgettable opportunity to see science in action and experience marine research firsthand.

The Alabama Species Initiative also helps schools maintain momentum during the fourth quarter, offering meaningful, engaging learning that keeps curiosity high and students connected through the end of the school year.

By combining research, creativity, and real scientific mentorship, this initiative empowers students to better understand Alabama’s natural heritage—and their role in protecting it.
